Schumpeter and the Second Machine Age

The Austrian economist Joseph Schumpeter (1883-1950) is seen as the founding father of economic theory about innovation. Schumpeter defines innovation as a fundamental change in an existing economic cycle, made possible by combining new technology with for instance new or existing production methods. These new combinations are introduced into the economic cycle by entrepreneurs who are aiming to obtain a position within existing markets by using these new combinations in new organisations under new models for the business operations. If these newcomers are successful in these existing markets, the economic cycle will be affected radically by these new combinations of technology, production methods and business models. This form of what Schumpeter calls ‘creative destruction’ forces the existing organisations to adopt these new combinations as well, or else they will lose their existing market position in the shorter or longer term.  Lees meer >>

New industrial revolution calls for network-centric approach

During the opening of the Hannover Messe trade fair on 6 April, Dutch Prime Minister Rutte suggested in his speech that the German evolution to Industries 4.0 also meant a revolution for Dutch industry: “A revolution in which the classic industrial production and sales operations are becoming increasingly intertwined with delivering full-service and network thinking in the entire production process. Across borders. Product and price continue to be important, but are increasingly less all-determining for business success.[1]” With this statement Rutte made it clear that both Dutch industry and the Dutch ICT sector need to prepare for large-scale change in our industrial production which is based on new technological developments and on network-associated objects. Lees meer >>

Cyberspace, cybernetics and cyber-physical systems

The term cybernetics, introduced in the middle of the last century by Norbert Wiener, still forms the basis for attributing significance to developments arising from new technology. The term cyberspace was introduced in the 1980s, and now mankind stands at the cusp of the development and design of cyber-physical systems.
