When I get into my car in the morning, I see it as normal that my smart phone will connect with my car via Bluetooth. This wireless connection, which was in fact discovered by a Dutch person, makes it possible for these two ´machines´ to find each other, connect and communicate with one another. For the duration of the journey they form, together with me as a human and as the driver of the car, a temporary network as ‘a set of actors connected by a set of ties’, as Borgatti et al would say. By way of a physical cable my smart phone can utilise power from the car as it is driving, in order that I can be, and stay, available when I am on the road.
